Why I Was So Afraid to Niche (Even as a Marketer)

You would think that as a marketer, I would have no problem picking a niche. I’ve been taught it over and over. “Define your audience, focus, become the expert, stand out in a crowded market.” Easy, right? Except somehow, when it came to my own business, I froze.

I think part of it was fear. Fear of excluding people, fear of closing doors, fear of making the wrong choice. My background is in real estate, and most people would assume that’s where I should go. It’s familiar, it’s measurable, and I love the clients I work with. I love helping people navigate something as big as buying or selling a home, and it never gets old seeing their excitement when things come together. I genuinely have a passion for this space, and I would never want my clients to feel otherwise.

But here’s the thing: when I thought about where my energy really goes, where I feel that little spark in my chest, I realized it’s often with creative entrepreneurs. People building something unique in the beauty space, hairstylists, aesthetician’s, lash artists, anyone pouring their heart into a brand that reflects their vision. There’s something about that creativity, that energy, that makes me want to show up with everything I’ve got. I get excited thinking about the ways I can help them grow, stand out, and bring their ideas to life.

So why was I afraid to niche? Because niching felt like choosing some clients over others. And I didn’t want anyone to think I care less about them. That’s the thing I want to make really clear: I love all the clients I work with. Real estate, finance, creative businesses, a client is someone I want to see succeed. Niching is not about exclusion. It’s about clarity. It’s about understanding where I feel most energized so I can bring my absolute best self to every client.

I’ve realized that niching doesn’t mean turning away from what you already know or love. It just means acknowledging what gets you excited and letting that guide part of your work. For me, that means having a soft spot for beauty and creative brands, while still being fully committed to my clients in real estate and beyond. My goal is the same no matter the industry: help passionate entrepreneurs build their brand, tell their story, and stand out.

In the end, niching is a tool, not a cage. It gives focus, clarity, and energy. And when I am working with any client, my dedication, passion, and excitement never change. I just happen to know now what lights me up the most along the way.
